Momentum Statement on the Welfare Bill

Momentum Co-Chairs said:

“Despite major last-minute concessions, the bill that passed in Parliament tonight will see up to £2bn of welfare cuts, with 700,000 people set to lose out on Universal Credit.

Solidarity with the 52 Labour MPs who voted against the bill and all those who helped secure such major concessions. Across a broad swathe of the PLP, they represent real Labour values and their defiance shows that the Party cannot simply be reduced to the actions of its Leadership. The Labour Party remains a key site of political struggle for Britain’s future.

The fight to stop the cuts will continue, and the entire labour movement has a responsibility to put as much pressure as possible on the Government to withdraw the legislation entirely. As socialist activists in the Labour Party, we will continue to play our part.”
