Labour Conference: What happened?
At Conference, Andy Burnham outlined a bold, exciting and distinctly Labour vision for Britain with pledges to bring essential services back into public ownership, create a National Care Service free at the point of use, end homelessness and put people before profit.
What’s more, progressive policies such as a wealth tax, the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation and a mass council housebuilding programme passed overwhelmingly on the Conference floor.
This Conference made clear that the left isn’t going anywhere – but winning the argument is only the beginning. We need an organised movement ready to turn bold ideas into action.
And we’re going to need your help.
Soon we’ll outline the steps you can take to build left power in your CLPs, councils and local communities, using this moment to reinvigorate our movement for change.
We’re going to need every single activist to play their part towards changing the culture of Labour. Together, we must build a Party that is democratic, members-led and unapologetically socialist.
Let’s not waste this opportunity.
Did the Budget go far enough?
From providing direct payments to households to ease the cost of living to temporarily increasing the surcharge on banks, there were measures in the Budget that were welcome. However, it didn’t go nearly as far enough to deliver the change Britain needs.
Burnham won plaudits at Labour Conference for pledging to end neoliberalism, but his Government must embrace far more radical solutions to improve living standards, end the privatisation rip-off and put more money into people’s pockets.
Plans to increase military spending at the upcoming spending review, alongside indications that oil drilling at Rosebank will get the go-ahead, are disappointing and will make Britain less safe amid global instability.
The Government’s key priorities must be to genuinely reverse austerity, rebuild our public and invest in a green, just transition.

- Israel strikes again: This week, a Progressive International delegation that included Labour figures Clive Lewis and Sam Tarry was refused entry into the West Bank. The UK must unequivocally condemn this. Solidarity with everyone demanding justice, peace and an end to Israel’s atrocities in Palestine.
- Tax bank super profits: Thousands of people signed Richard Burgon’s petition urging the Government to tax excess profits on banks. Temporary measures were taken, but the Government must go further and faster in putting people before profit.
- Right to Food: Over 14 million people across Britian live with food insecurity. Last month, the TUC passed a motion showing that hunger is a trade union issue. Even Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said that we need a Right to Food in the past, now it’s time for him to act. Agree? Add your name here.
- Take action against genocide: Labour members want to see a recognition of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, a ban on all arms sales and widespread sanctions on the Israli apartheid state. The Government must heed the calls from its own Party. Sign out petition here urging it to take concrete action.
- Make Labour Democratic Again: Burnham must restore democracy in our Party. That means free and fair selections and respect for members’ rights so that every part of our movement is heard. Use our lobbying tool urging him to make restoring democracy a key priority of his Leadership.
- The socialist policies we need: Socialism is how we build Britain for the many. The Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs have outlined the policies needed to do that. Read them here.

At a time when Labour and our wider movement are at a critical turning point, these elections will play an important role in helping shape our future as a people-powered, grassroots organisation.
Interested in standing as a NCG candidate? Applications are open! If you’re a fully paid up Momentum member, you can put yourself forward to sit on our organisation’s highest body.
More details about the role and how to apply can be found here.
The self nomination period closes next Tuesday 3rd November. Don’t miss out!
A victory for the Brazilian left
A huge congratulations to Brazilian president Lula and the wider Brazilian left for their historic victory over the far right in Brazil’s presidential election.
Since democracy was restored in 1985, Lula’s re-election was the first time a second-placed candidate in the first round went on to win in the second round. What’s more, 3 million more Brazilian voters turned out for the second round run-off.
As the far right makes significant gains across the globe, a feat for the left in the world’s tenth largest economy is one worth celebrating. Not just for democracy but for the working-class, for Indigenous peoples, for climate justice and for the Amazon.
