Community Organising
Change comes from the grassroots. Local activists building power in their communities is a crucial part of the political process.
Workplace organising
Local Momentum groups are heavily involved in supporting workplace organising and defending public services. In Lewisham, local Momentum activists successfully lobbied the council to withhold the cinema contract from Picturehouse in support of the Picturehouse Living Wage campaign.
Stockport Momentum has been heavily supporting the local rail campaign to end rip off train fares and bring it back into public ownership, while in Manchester Momentum activists have supported local bus strikes.
Community support
Momentum members across the country do great work in their communities. This ranges from:
- setting up community food clubs in Lancaster and Gateshead,
- organising events on stop and search in BAME communities in Kensington and Chelsea,
- members in Glasgow who have set up a ‘toybank’ to make sure children from low income families had toys for Christmas,
- a local group in the highlands of Scotland touring local hospitals giving NHS staff thank you cards for their hard work.
Arts and culture
Momentum groups are setting up arts, music, sports and social projects to bring people together and build communities. In Manchester, groups have organised walks, pub quizzes, bingo nights, disco nights and gigs, while in Plymouth activists are hoping to work with Arts Council England on developing community-led, bottom-up arts programmes to bridge the creative and the political.
Barnsley Momentum have held film screenings, while groups across the North East have been involved in delivering ‘pint and politics’ political education sessions across the country.
