Hello comrades,

In this latest issue, we bring you:

  • Reset the Labour Party
  • News from across the movement
  • Key internal elections
  • Israel’s sickening new death penalty law

Members from across Labour are calling for a reset

After Labour’s humiliating defeat in Gorton and Denton, and with predictions of a drubbing in the upcoming Local Elections, a reset has never been more urgent and popular.

We’ve joined forces with socialists and progressives from across the Party demanding Labour rebuilds democracy, restores genuinely democratic selections, ends the suspension of dissenting MPs, and moves away from the overall top-down control.

To ensure members’ voices are heard, we’re backing three brilliant socialist candidates – Gemma Bolton, Yasmine Dar & Minesh Parekh – for the CLP section of Labour’s National Executive Committee. You can find out more about them here

We’re also recommending support for three Mainstream candidates – Cat Arnold, Jovan Owusu-Nepaul & Kerry Postlewhite – to form a broad coalition against the authoritarianism of the Labour Right.

This is not a joint slate. However, if you’re a Labour member who believes in a progressive, democratic Party, nominate these candidates in your CLP before Friday 26 June.

You can find more details about the Reset Labour initiative via the webpage here

  • Restore Labour Democracy: A coalition of trade union leaders, Labour MPs and campaigners launched a call to restore members’ rights and end the narrow, top-down control from the Leadership. Agree? Sign the statement here.
  • Are you ready to take the next steps in becoming a socialist organiser? We’re pleased to announce the launch of this year’s Leo Panitch Leadership Programme, training up the next generation of socialist organisers and leaders. Interested in taking part? Check out our webpage here.
  • Conference Delegates: We’re on the lookout for left-wing delegates who will stand up to the Leadership and work with allied trade unions to pass progressive motions at Labour Conference this year. Could that be you? Or someone else that you know? Let us know by filling in the form.
  • Rule Changes: We are putting forward two rule changes for Conference that aim to restore democratic rights across our CLPs and prevent a narrow agenda being imposed in any future leadership contest. CLPs have until 26th June to put forward one of these rule changes. Please note that CLPs can only submit one rule change or one policy motion. See rule changes here.

We need a real Labour alternative

If the Government was serious about winning back support from the Greens and Reform, it would change direction. But it hasn’t, so it’s time for a wholesale change of approach in Labour.

That’s why Momentum and the Centre-Left Grassroots Alliance (CLGA) are supporting candidates for internal Party elections who will champion real Labour values, ensure disciplinary processes are fair and accountable to members, and oppose anti-democratic manoeuvres by the Party leadership.

Alongside the NEC, we also have a slate of candidates for Labour’s National Constitutional Committee, National Women’s Committee and National Policy Forum. Make sure to nominate them in your CLPs before 26 June

Israel’s new dehumanising death penalty law

The Israeli Knesset has just approved new legislation that enforces the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners convicted of terrorism offences.

There has been widespread opprobrium across the board, with Amnesty International demanding its urgent repeal whilst the Palestine Solidarity Campaign described the new law as “abhorrent.”

The UK condemned the law – but it must go further. The Labour Government must ban all Israeli arms sales, impose sanctions on those responsible for genocide and stop treating Israel as an ally and key partner.
